Experiences in class....I really enjoyed..and learned alot...!!!

In the beginning I used to hate English. I did not like reading books. After coming to this class, I started liking English. When I started reading books for the assignments, I got interested in reading more and more books. I understood that reading is one kind of enjoyment too. Slowly I got more interest in doing assignments for this class. I was weak in writing but after coming to this class, my writing has been improved a lot. When I see my writing I feel the big difference in it. Now I pay attention to each and every sentence I write and try to find the mistake and change it. I really liked the two books that we did in class. Plots of those books were really interesting and they were unique in their own way. This blog thing is very good. It is nice interacting place. This is the most interesting part and also different from writing essays in a paper, it is like a break kfrom books. As a teacher, you have taught me many things which are important for me for my future. I m pretty sure, I am not leaving the course empty handed. I am taking many good memories from the class and from the teacher.

My perception on a "Real man"

It is truly said by Garson Keillor “Years ago manhood was an opportunity and now it is a problem to be overcome.” In 21st century to be a man one should be responsible, courageous and understanding. To accept all this characteristic, at the same time is like going for a war. So it can be called a problem that is to over come for boys.

A man has to finally marry and after they get marry, they have to take care of their family. His wife and children have big expectations like he bring them the necessary things, take them out for a picnic twice or thrice a month and lastly, give them love and affection. These are the family responsibilities that a man has to carry upon. A man also has other responsibilities to carry upon too. Work is other responsibility on man. At work he has many tasks to complete. He has to follow all the instructions of his boss and have to follow them. To overcome all this chores of his life, he has to be prepared. Following this chores everyday is hard and a problematic work.

A man has to be courageous enough to face all the barriers coming in his way. He has to protect his family each and every time anything goes wrong. To protect them one need courage. Courage does not mean the courage that Lady Macbeth wanted to see in Macbeth. It is not a negative side of courage but it is only to guard the family from all the difficulties. Moreover one need guts to go out in this competitive world and struggle to make his identity. He might get failure in his way but he should not get depressed. He should accept that failure and next time work hard to achieve what he got failure into.

Also, the most important trait is to be understanding. A man should understand his situations and find ways to make his and his family’s life happy. He should understand people around him. Without understanding each other there would be fights which would finally lead to breaking up the relations. Understanding also means respecting some one’s opinion and valuing their thinking or saying. At times one should appreciate his family members to give them enthusiasm and courage to do anything. This is also one kind of support which is necessary in a family to progress.

I always thought that a man is recognised by his looks. Like a man should have moustache and should have good muscles. But gradually when I grew up I came to know that a man is always seen by his behaviour and not appearance.

Lastly, a “Real man” is best describing in Johann Walfgang Von Gorthe quote, “Who is the happiest of man? He who values the merits of others and in their pleasure takes joy. Even as though t’were its own”. A man is not how one looks but it’s the quality of the person that makes him a man.

Was Lady Macbeth ultimately responsible for Macbeth's downfall?

During Shakespeare’s time, the status of women was very low. They were not allowed to get educated and did not have right of speech. Contrary, a man was at the head position in the society. Shakespeare has shown the actual side of women in his other plays except Macbeth. In Macbeth, he has given women very high powers by giving Lady Macbeth and the witches the right of speech. For instance, when Lady Macbeth gets the letter from Macbeth mentioning the witches’ prophecy and him being given the thane of Cowdor, it shows Lady Macbeth’s ability to read and involve in her husband’s matter which was a typical for women in those times.

I think that Macbeth’s downfall was because of Lady Macbeth as she was the one who provoked him to kill King Duncan even though he was not willing to kill him. This is shown in Act 1 Scene 5 when first Lady Macbeth gives Macbeth the idea to kill King Duncan in order to get the throne earlier. Also Lady Macbeth knows that her husband was a man with white blood, so he will not kill the King. So she finds another way to succeed in her plan. She starts questioning Macbeth’s manhood, because of which Macbeth felt that in this case he has to prove himself infront of his wife. So later, he agrees to kill the King. This is also shown in Act 1 Scene 7 (Lines 46 through 47), when Macbeth says, “I dare do all that may become a man; who dares do more is none”, by which we can say that the effort of Lady Macbeth by questioning Macbeth’s manhood has succeeded.

On the other side, still Macbeth is thinking on the plan and again decides to deny the plan of killing the king to which again Lady Macbeth by telling that the plan was made and that Macbeth has to only go and kill the king when he is sleeping. After a lot of effort Macbeth gets ready to murder the king which was the first step to Macbeth’s downfall. This made him unable to sleep which gave rise to his cruel acts. Also during this time, Lady Macbeth gives strength to Macbeth by telling him that washing their hands will free them from their deeds.

Lady Macbeth gave Macbeth strength to do all the evil deeds and made him feel that she is with him in whatever he did. This encourages him the most, because of which he gradually went towards his downfall.

*The prognostication of witch ruining human brains*

Looking at the nature of prophecy, it seems fascination and what I believe on it is that making prophecies is basically pointless. It is proven from the novel “Macbeth” about the King Macbeth. The incident when the three witches predict Macbeth’s future which could be true or false! But it was Macbeth, who believed in the prophecy and ruined his whole life. There are many people that allege that they can predict the future and sometimes it works, but it is not always true. I do not say that the people who read horoscopes everyday are crazy but the people who strongly believe in it are foolish.

Sylvia Browne claims of having contact with “Good spirits” and I feel that she is insane. This people act to have powers with which they can talk to spirits and also see other’s future. I think that this is just a mere way of looting people. As we see Ms. Browne takes a charge of $750 for one session that last one and a half hour. It is a business or a way of earning lots of money more than the thrust of helping out people. If she could see future or predict things then why won’t she see her own future and find some better ways to earn money and to help people. Moreover she predicts things that are more obvious and broad. For instance, she says, “Some glaciers will be breaking up at rapid speed; we are in a "polar tilt" tornadoes in odd places. More volcanoes everywhere erupting, flooding in the south, earthquakes and tsunamis” which is but obvious, it was not just a prediction but a fact that global warming due to people’s carelessness would disturb the earth’s setting and as a result tsunami’s and melting glaciers are understandable.

Moreover, most schools of astrology disagree on some of the fundamental tenets of their craft, and all of them supported only by anecdotal evidence of the most unreliable kind. Though thousands of years have passed in gathering data and refining their study, astrologers are not arriving at a consensus. A real example can be experimented right before our eyesight. Just read the astrology columns of ten different newspapers and magazines or have your horoscope prepared by ten different astrologers and you will most likely get ten different interpretations. There are no hard proofs which can support the prediction of astrologers. And as Frank Lloyd Wright said, “The things always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in the thing makes it happen”, meaning that if you believe in any fact would make it happen because that’s what you desire and that’s what is making it work and also cause you have shown your effort in making that thing happen.

I never went to a psychic neither had my fortune read (tarot cards, palm reading). Being a Hindu, my parents do believe in prophecies and they do read horoscopes from newspaper. And the matter of fact, according to our ancient customs, we arrange the date of the marriage based on the match of the bride’s and bridegroom’s horoscope to make sure if they are compatible and would live happily in their married life. But in our case study, what Ms. Browne says is just a common sense more than a new fact for someone.
